Hot on the heels of the chart-topping Military Wives, a group of Scottish singers is releasing an album in the hope of repeating their success.
It may still be 160 days until Christmas, but a Scottish choir have recorded an album in the hope of securing the coveted number one spot on 25 December. The West of Scotland Military Wives Choir recorded their 14 track album on Friday, and plan to storm the charts – with or without the help of Gareth Malone.
Formed in March, the choir has already performed at the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games, and at Glasgow’s Armed Forces Day. Now they plan to take their success to new heights, and all for a good cause – 28 of the 32 singers have husbands stationed in the Navy, and they will be donating profits from record sales to the Military Wives Foundation.
Founder Joanne McMurdo was inspired to set up the choir after last year's singers topped the charts with Wherever You Are, raising more than £500,000 for charity. She made fliers asking people to join, and posted them through doors at military accommodation in Helensburgh.
"We work closely with the foundation and they asked a while ago if we would like to record a second military wives album," she said. "I felt that, as well as being good fun, the choir would be a way of meeting other military wives and forming a sort of support network."
Singers from this year’s military choir have been sworn to secrecy about the works featured on the album. We’ll have to wait until the finished album is released in November.
